Surface geostrophic currents are derived from the near real-time satellite altimetry product produced by AVISO (www.aviso.altimetry.fr), and sea surface temperatures (SST) are derived from the satellite product produced by Met Office (www.metoffice.gov.uk). The two products are also served via the E.U. Copernicus Marine Environment Monitoring Service (CMEMS) (marine.copernicus.eu/). A mean dynamic height of mdt_cnes_cls2013 is added to the sea level anomaly data to get sea surface height (SSH). Geostrophic currents are computed from the gradient of the SSH, which approximates the actual surface currents. The surface geostrophic currents product is provided in detail as Altimetry-Derived Surface Geostrophic Currents.

A similar satellite SST & Surface Geostrophic Currents product in a bigger region U.S. Southeast Coastal Ocean is also available.
